New walkways: Grants allows for Bruceton sidewalks to be replaced

BRUCETON MILLS — Bruceton Mills will soon have new handicapped accessible sidewalks.

Mayor Cathy Smith said a grant from the West Virginia Transportation Alternatives and Recreational Trails Program will allow sidewalks along W.Va. 73 to be replaced.

According to Brent Walker, director of communications for the West Virginia Department of Transportation, the project started April 6.

He said it involves the upgrade and installation of sections of sidewalk and Americans with Disabilities Act ramps on Morgantown Road (Route 73/73) from just west of Armstrong Avenue to just east of Mill Street.

ADA ramp specifications require a 1:12 ramp slope ratio, which equals a 4.8-degree slope or one foot of wheelchair ramp for each inch of rise. For instance, a 30-inch rise requires a 30-foot handicap wheelchair ramp.

Walker said the project will cost $275,085. He said the contractor for the project is ALL Construction, of Mount Storm, and the planned completion date for the project is July 31.

Smith said there will only be enough money to do the sidewalks up through town.

“Lighting for the sidewalks will be a future project the town will have to pay for,” she said.

Smith said sidewalks on Union Street were not included in the grant.    “They will be included in the future planning of the town council,” she said.
