Morgantown High volleyball team sweeps its way to sectional championship

MORGANTOWN — Losing only one set all night, the Morgantown High volleyball team rolled past both Brooke, 3-1, and John Marshall, 3-0.

After dropping the opening set against Brooke 22-25, head coach Erica Manor was not too worried and told her team what was in front of them.

“We came out and did really play our game of volleyball so I told the kids you have one or two options and they flipped the switch for us and took care of business when we needed to take care of business.”

The next set was a massive change as MHS rolled to a 25-13 win to tie the match.

In the third set, the score was kept close being tied 10 times but ended with MHS pulling away to win 25-19 to gain a 2-1 lead. They went on to close out the match with a dominating 25-13 display in the fourth set.

In the final match of the night, MHS met JMHS, who defeated Wheeling Park, for the sectional title.

After winning the first set 25-12, MHS was in perfect sync. The next two sets were more competitive, including a 25-19 second set and a 25-21 set three to give MHS the victory in straight sets.

Coming into sectionals, the game plan from all season had not changed and Manor does not plan on adjustments moving forward.

“Be aggressive on both offense and defense and to get a little more aggressive on serving as we roll into the next round. [We’ll] just continue to refine little things here and there.”

Ella Voorhees, who had 5 aces and 23 digs in the two matches, made hustle play after hustle play. Her ability to dive for and reach almost every ball did not go unnoticed by Manor.

“She grew what we were calling a cape tonight. She was flying all over the place like Superman. She did a really good job staying aggressive, was getting a lot of balls that would’ve hit the ground otherwise,” she said.

Kaytln Anderson led the team with 23 kills and Paige Brock had a very impressive night with 43 assists, 21 digs, 2 aces over the two matches.

Morgantown’s next match will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at John Marshall High School in the Region I tournament. The Mohigans will face rival University High in the first round.
