Annual FFA show forced to move online

Bidding starts at $8 per pound, bids cut off at 8 p.m. Friday

KINGWOOD — Bidding for the 2020 Preston County FFA Ham and Bacon Show will be online this year.

Preston High School FFA members who raised hogs for the sale have their hams and bacons posted online   at www.wadesonlineauctions.com for bidding. Bidding starts at $8 per pound.

Bidding ends at 8 p.m.  Friday. Items are being sold per pound. No buyers premium or state sales tax is being charged on this auction.

“This is a project that the kids started a little less than a year ago,” PHS agriculture teacher Samantha Funk said.

“They had to raise a hog, they had to skin it out and butcher it in November, and since that time here at the school they have been working on trimming, curing, smoking. So we were almost at the end of this big project, and then all of the shutdowns and everything happened.”

The hams and bacons could have been sent home, where they would have been appreciated, but Funk said teachers wanted students to have a chance to sell their product, “to finish what they started.”

“Typically, at a normal sale, when kids sell two hams and two bacons, they make around about a $1,000, sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more,” Funk said.

Many FFA members use the money for college or other projects.

Each member is only selling one ham and one bacon this year. About 33 students have items in the auction. The hams and bacon were weighed and tested for spoilage, but will not be judged.

And while this is typically the ham, bacon and egg show, no eggs are being sold this year.

Purchased items can be sliced and must be picked up from Preston High.
