Trinity, Morgantown, University seniors get one more shot in all-star basketball game

It’s the last time out for a pair of Trinity Christian seniors.

Daniel Woods and Joel Robertson were crucial pieces of a Trinity team that reached back-to-back Class A State Semifinal appearances.
Neither, however, will continue their career at the collegiate level, choosing to attend WVU and focus solely on academics.

The duo will get one last chance to shine today during the annual Boys’ North-South All-Star Basketball Classic. The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. at the South Charleston Community Center.

“My mentality is to just go out and have a good time — this is an opportunity that I probably will never have again as long as I live,” Woods said.
“With this being my last game, I want to make sure it’s memorable. This game sums up my four years of high school basketball. It will definitely be a bittersweet moment, but one I’m going to remember forever,” Robertson added.

The Trinity representatives are two of just four Class A players on the 11-player North roster, which will be headed by Robbie Strcula (Parkersburg Catholic) and Jordan Toth (Lincoln).

“It’s really an honor to be chosen. There is a lot of talent around this state and to be one of the few selected for this game is a great feeling,” Robertson said.

“Year after year the best players in West Virginia play in this game and it feels great to be considered apart of that group,” Woods added.

After the program’s growth into a Class A championship contender the past three seasons under coach John Fowkes, he said it’s been a great year for his group of seniors and he is happy to see their accolades.

“These guys deserve everything they are recognized for. They’re great on the court, great in the weight room, but most importantly, great in the classroom,” Fowkes said.

Selders looks to develop game

Morgantown senior Cam Selders has lofty goals — he hopes tonight’s North-South game is a step toward achieving them.

Selders has always been about big time plays, and he’ll make the biggest move of his career this fall as he attempts to walk-on to the squad at WVU.
During the North-South game he will surround himself with the best talent in the state and plans to use it as a learning tool.

“I hope this helps shape my game a little more and show me what I need to work on. These players and coaches will probably bring the best out of me, especially since it could possibly be my last game,” he said.

Selders knows the task in front of him is tall, but believes the fact that he has made it far enough to be chosen for tonight’s game says a lot about his skill level.

“It shows that people like and respect my game enough to have me at this great event,” he said.
Selders will be joined by University’s Rodney Bucklew on the North team.

Baseball

Preston’s Corey Pyles will join the North roster for the North-South All-Star Baseball Classic, which is set for Sunday at Glenville State.
