TERRA ALTA — Children in Lisa DeWitt’s kindergarten class at East Preston each received a mini-library.

AmeriCorps volunteer Darla Shaffer  bought and collected books for the 16 students as part of an AmeriCorps project.

“With COVID, she (Shaffer) couldn’t come into the classroom,” DeWitt said.

She said each of the  students in her kindergarten  received eight books. “The books were spread out on a mat and they took turns choosing one at a time,” DeWitt  said.

DeWitt   “said the kids were so happy with the first book they chose but were more excited when they realized they could go back for more,” Shaffer said. “They also got to take them home; their very own books.”

DeWitt said she chose a couple of the books and read them to the students.

“It was very nice. Some kids don’t get a lot of books,” she said. “We appreciated it. It couldn’t have been better.”
