DAR, Friends of the Cheat dedicate flag, flag pole

ALBRIGHT — On June 17, Susan Arnold and Vicky Shears of the Elizabeth Ludington Hagans-Colonel John Evans Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution  joined Amanda Pitzer, executive director of  Friends of the Cheat,  and Beth Warnick, FOC media and outreach specialist, at the Cheat Fest site in Albright for a dedication of a U.S. flag and a flag pole.

The dedication was originally scheduled  for Flag Day on June 14, but the weather did not cooperate.

It was a new experience for the DAR chapter to limit the size of the group, wear masks and have the dedication taped for mass viewing. Pitzer provided opening remarks and  Arnold presented FOC with a certificate from the NSDAR and the Flag of the United States of America Committee, which read, “For proper use, correct display and patriotic presentation of the Flag of the United States of America.”

The program continued  with the reading of the poem, “I Am Your Flag,” from the Association of the United States Army website, followed by the raising of the flag by Shears and Pitzer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

The video of the dedication, created by Beth Warnick, can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vomrp7kmziM.

The flag raised was one that was previously flown over the United States Capitol building and was provided to FOC by Congressman David McKinley.

FOC put out a call after receiving the U.S. flag for a flag pole to fly the flag at the organization’s festival site. The Hagans-Evans Chapter answered that call and provided the funding to purchase the flag pole.

In her opening remarks, Pitzer also gave credit to Gary Sypolt and crew, of GEC Inc. of Bruceton Mills, for pouring the pad and installing the  pole, to Camp Dawson’s Environmental crew that helps maintain the site, and to the West Virginia Land Trust that helped FOC secure the purchase of the property.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a nonprofit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to preserving American history, securing America’s future through better education, and promoting patriotism.
