WVU eliminates FallFest from its Welcome Week lineup

MORGANTOWN – WVU Executive Director of Strategic Communications Shauna Johnson confirmed Wednesday that the nearly 30-year run of FallFest has come to an end.

“West Virginia University regularly adjusts Welcome Week offerings based on student feedback,” Johnson said.

FallFest is the annual Welcome Week concert that has, throughout the years, featured a long list of artists including The Roots, Kanye West, Maroon 5, Mac Miller and Kendrick Lamar since its inception in 1995.

The event took a two-year pause due to COVID in 2020 and 2021.

The 2025 concert featured four-time Grammy winning West Virginia native Sierra Ferrell.

According to Johnson, “The University is moving forward with new experiences to fit the interests of today’s students, including the Mountaineer Midway and Movie event for all students from 6 p.m.- 10 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, on the Downtown area of campus.”

While more details are expected in July, a current list of Welcome Week activities includes:

  • WVUp All Night – Aug. 15
  • Student Organization Fair – Aug. 16
  • Sunday Night Lights – Aug. 16
  • Mountaineer Midway and Movie – Aug. 17

The first day of classes is Aug. 18.
