More candidates file for Fairmont City Council

FAIRMONT – The ballot is filling up for Fairmont’s city council election in November.

A mix of mainly incumbents – plus three newcomers to date – have filed for the race, City Clerk Janet Keller said.

Sitting councilors of districts 3, 8 and 9 are seeking reelection in that race, according to filing documents.

They are Rebecca Moran, Bruce McDaniel and Kandi Nuzum, respectively.

Donna Wade, who is currently filling the 5th district seat that was vacant after the death of Chuck Warner, has also announced she’ll run.

Warner had served several terms after making his name as a professional photographer and former Fairmont radio personality before that. He died suddenly in January.

Wade was appointed by council that following month.

Wade, an EMT by training and assistant chief of the Marion County Rescue Squad was sworn in and had her first meeting – on the same night.

“It was a little bit of ‘Hit the ground running,’” she said, “but in my job, I’m used to that.”

Marcella Yaremchuk, a longtime fixture in Fairmont and Marion County, has applied to run for the 1st District that will be left vacant by Josh Rice, the deputy mayor who is stepping down.

David Ice will make a run against Wade in the 5th district and Shawna Santee is seeking the office for the 8th district.

Applications for council may be submitted through 4:30 p.m. Aug. 5.

Candidates must file in person at the City Clerk’s office, which is located in Room 312 of the J. Harper Meredith Building in the City-County Complex, 200 Jackson St., Fairmont.
