Chili cookoff to benefit Clay-Battelle basketball team

BLACKSVILLE — For the first time, Blacksville Basketball Association will be hosting a chili cookoff and cornhole tournament to serve as a fundraiser for Clay-Battelle’s basketball team.

The idea of the cookoff came from one of the parents in the association, according to Amber Payton, the secretary and treasurer of Blacksville Basketball Association.

“Her son plays basketball and both of her sons play golf,” Payton said. “She was saying she had been to one before and it was really fun.”

The cookoff will take place at the upper pavilion at Mason-Dixon Park on Oct. 4, serving 20 different soups and chilis, Payton added.

Admission for the cookoff is $10, Payton said.

“And that’s all you can eat chili, soup, desserts and drinks,” she said. “We’re going to do a 50/50 raffle, we are also going to have multiple raffle baskets to sell raffle tickets for. We are giving out awards to the best chili, second place and then a fan-favorite award.”

The lineup of judges has been released for the chili cookoff, which includes former Clay-Battelle Principal David Cottrell and his wife Marsha Cottrell, Sally LaPoe, Austin Ponceroff and current Clay-Battelle Principal Mitch Channell, Payton added.

Those who want to enter the chili cookoff must pay a $20 entrance fee.

During the duration of the chili cookoff, weather permitting, there will be a cornhole tournament costing $5 per team, Payton said.

The goal of the chili cookoff was to do something to get people out and involved in the community, Payton said.

“We are hoping to raise some funds to help replace the backpacks for the boys and do some renovations to the locker room,” she said. “If we’re fortunate enough to go back to states, those funds can help us get there.”

If the cookoff goes well, Payton noted she hopes to see it continue in the future.
