The strawberries are back at Morgantown High: Annual sale helps fund academic programs, other offerings

What – you never saw a strawberry help a student achieve academically before?

At the root of it all, that’s what those strawberries sold annually by the Morgantown High School Foundation are doing.

The 2023 edition of the fundraiser is now in full bloom for the nonprofit foundation, which doles dollars for academic competitions, additions to library shelves and more.

Orders are being taken through April 16 for the tasty treat, the foundation said.

Strawberries are sold at $34 for a full flat (about 12 pints) and $17 for a half flat. You can even make a donation without buying.

The foundation over the years has been able to launch new programs while paying for time-honored, proven ones – all thanks to fragaria ananassa.

Proceeds from the sale help pay travel expenses for the MHS Bowl Team, which is the middle of another national championship run, while added digital titles to the library of the foreign language department.

It helps underwrite the school’s participation in the Model UN Club, the National Youth Leadership Forum and the West Virginia Boys State and Rhododendron Girls State gatherings every summer at WVU Jackson’s Mill.

Most recently, it helped with the reprinting of the acclaimed book, “Peaceful Patriot,” which chronicles the life and times of MHS graduate Thomas Bennett, a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War who posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his bravery as a combat medic.

Along with Bennett other MHS graduates of note include Don Knotts, the comedic actor who won Emmys for his portrayal of bumbling Barney Fife on the Andy Griffith television show in the 1960s; and Charles Vest, the president emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

To order, visit the MHS Foundation page on Facebook or scan the QR code on the sale’s flyers displayed around town.

PayPal and Venmo orders are also accepted, and orders may also be taken at https://form.jotform.com/220243987905159 to streamline the process even more, the foundation said.

Mail-in orders, with checks made payable to the MHS Foundation, Inc., may be sent to P.O. Box 1431, Morgantown, WV 26507.

Strawberries will be available for pickup 10 a.m.-6 p.m. May 5 at the WVU Coliseum.
