A look at bills introduced Wednesday, Jan. 19

MORGANTOWN – Here is a look at some of the bills introduced on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Local sponsors and cosponsors, if any, are noted.

SB 426, to raise the tax on tobacco products and e-cigarette liquids. The tobacco tax would go from $1.20 to $1.50 per pack.

SB 428, to raise the state minimum wage to $10.50 per hour with subsequent annual raises, starting in 2025, geared to inflation. Sen. Bob Beach, D-Monongalia, co-sponsor.

SB 429, to increase the income tax exclusion for West Virginia Public Employees’ Retirement System participants from $2,000 to $20,000. Sen. Dave Sypolt, R-Preston, sponsor.

SB 432, to provide certain retirees from the Public Employees Retirement System and the State Teachers Retirement System who are at least age 70 and have at least 20 years’ service to receive a one-time bonus of $1,500. Sen. Charles Clements, R-Wetzel, co-sponsor.

HB 4258, to permit landowners or lessees of land whose land is damaged by deer or other wildlife to hire a third party to kill the deer or other wildlife by bow and arrow.

HB 4259, the Small Business Jumpstart Act, from the governor.

HB 4260, to create a state central legal advertising website and reduce use of legal ads in newspapers.

HB 4264, to change the name of Glenville State College to Glenville State University.

HB 4270, to eliminate Daylight Savings Time and make Standard Time effective year-round. Delegates Phil Mallow, R-Marion, Terri Sypolt, R-Preston, co-sponsors.
