Margaret Mathena

Margaret Eloise (Thomas) Mathena, 89, of Keyser, died on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020.

Born on Jan. 4, 1931 in Keyser, she was the youngest child of the late Mary Jane (Calhoun) and William W. Thomas.

She is also preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Reginald Wallace “Rex” Mathena, on Sept. 4, 2016; four brothers, E. Wade Thomas (Mae), Albert W. Thomas, Harry K. Thomas (Ora) and H. Donald Thomas (Laura); and her three sisters, Julia E. Oates (Lester), Roberta E. Johnson (Roy) and Erma Lee Snyder (Delbert). She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Eloise graduated from Keyser High School, Class of 1948 and was a former G.C. Murphy Co. Clerk, Telephone Operator for C & P Telephone and helped her husband, Rex, as a bookkeeper when he owned the Gulf Station. She was an active member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Presbyterian Women and held many offices, including that of president. In 1991, she was honored with a Life Membership Award in this organization.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan C. “Sue” Armstrong and husband William “Biff,” of Kingwood; her grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of her life, Jennifer L. ”Jenny” Armstrong and William F. “Bill” Armstrong and fiancée Grace K. Childs; and a sister-in-law, Frances Thomas. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Markwood Funeral Home from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26. Funeral services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Thomas H. Forbes officiating. Interment will be held in Queen’s Point Cemetery, Keyser.

Due to the current health concerns, all guests are required to wear face masks and exercise social distancing at all time.
