Preston’s Lady of Agriculture honored

BRUCETON MILLS — Preston County FFA Alumni honored the 2020 Lady of Agriculture and Ted Gregg Memorial Scholarship winner Friday night.

Six Preston High seniors competed for the honor. Judges from outside Preston County made their choice based on academic success, knowledge of and enthusiasm for agriculture, and their overall demeanor.

This year’s Lady of Agriculture, and the 29th person to hold the title, is Savannah Hauser, daughter of Joseph and Stephanie Hauser of Aurora.

Her favorite thing about agriculture is, “I get to help others,” Hauser said, because agriculture impacts the whole community.

After graduation she plans to become a physical therapist.

First runner up is Whitney Pomeroy, daughter of Kenny and Suenette Pomeroy of Eglon. Second runner up is Bailey Kahl, daughter of Wayne and Kari Kahl of Bruceton Mills.

Also competing for the honor were Saharah Belanger, daughter of Bradley and Heather Belanger of Bruceton Mills; Lara Hayes, daughter of Larry and Cheryl Hayes of Kingwood; and Maddilynn Sypolt, daughter of Michael Sypolt and Carrie Stottlemeyer of Albright.

Brianna Nine, daughter of Barbara Nine, received the 2020 Ted Gregg Memorial Scholarship. This is the second year the scholarship, created in honor of the late FFA Alumni member, has been given.

Nine said she also helps on the farm and raises animals for show and sale at the Buckwheat Festival. She plans to train as a vet tech after high school.

The Lady of Agriculture will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Each runner up will receive a $250 scholarship. The money comes through club fundraising and from state funds.
