Kingwood Pool leaks, council looks at possible repairs

KINGWOOD — The Kingwood Pool needs expensive repairs.

As in a $75,000 vinyl liner.

Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Stiles told Kingwood Council Tuesday that the pool leaks. It’s a recurring problem that was last repaired about 12 years ago, Stiles said.

There is a spring under one end of the pool, “so it’s always moving,” Stiles said. A vinyl liner would allow for the movement and not leak as soon, he said. He estimated vinyl might last 10 years.

Even with two hoses placed in the pool overnight pumping out 25 gallons per minute each, it’s impossible to keep the water level high enough so the skimmer works properly, necessitating a lot of cleaning by hand, Stiles said.

The leak is somewhere about three feet from the top.

“I would hate to close the pool permanently,” Mayor Jean Guillot said. “You have to have things to do.”

Plaster would be cheaper but not last, Stiles said. He suggested checking with BOPARC to find out what company it used a few years ago to detect leaks, to pinpoint the exact location.

“This fall would be the time to test it,” Stiles said. “If you’re going to do it for next years, you’ve got to start soon.”

The news of needed repairs comes on top of what Stiles predicted will be a record loss for the pool because of COVID-19, possibly as much as $30,000.
