West Virginia the latest team to offer juco forward Langston Wilson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia men’s basketball program is currently full when it comes to scholarships for the 2021 hoops season, but that hasn’t stopped the Mountaineers from continuing to be active on the recruiting trail.

The Mountaineers have two players committed for the 2021 class in Ohio guards Seth Wilson and Kobe Johnson, with Taz Sherman and Gabe Osabuohien set to exhaust their eligibility at the end of this season. Still, with the nature of the hoops roster, prospects are continuing to be targeted.

And the latest scholarship recipient is one with quite the interesting backstory.

Rome (Ga.) Georgia Highlands College forward Langston Wilson never expected to be recruited, forget being holding 40 scholarship offers from high-major programs. That’s because Wilson, a native of Pennsylvania, didn’t even play organized high school basketball.

Instead, Wilson moved to Georgia after graduating and came into contact with the coaches at Highland, where he was eventually offered a scholarship. The rest is history as he averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game while receiving offers from Seton Hall, Maryland, Kansas State, Alabama, Georgia, Memphis, Oregon and South Carolina. Now, add WVU to that list.

The Mountaineers efforts are led by assistant Larry Harrison, and after being in contact for around two weeks, Wilson was able to get on a zoom call with the coaches. That’s when he received the news.

“That’s when they offered me. I’m interested of course because of coach Huggins’ resume and what he has done with players and where he sees me playing at. It’s always nice, especially the type of program they are and the conference they are in,” he said.

Wilson is a versatile big man who can handle the ball, stretch the floor and move without the ball. That alone has gotten the interest of major college programs with his overall potential.

The junior college prospect has at least two years left and isn’t sure when he will start the process of narrowing things down with his options. For now, he is taking his time with everything, but enjoying that he has entered a recruitment that he never imagined would be unfolding.

“I’m just feeling out the whole recruiting process and seeing where it takes me,” he said.
