Morgantown native Matt Harbert to appear on America’s Got Talent

MORGANTOWN —

“I’m going to be playing music … Well, I’ll say this — it has a bit of a twist to it.”

If you want to know any more about the specific talents of Morgantown native Matt Harbert, you’ll have to tune into NBC’s America’s Got Talent at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

Harbert grew up in Morgantown and studied acting at WVU before moving to Los Angeles in 2006.

Now — when the county isn’t locked down due to global pandemics and LA isn’t on riot curfew — he’s a regular performer at the Pack Theater.

It was through connections at the theater that he learned the popular talent showcase was seeking talent for its 15th season.

“It seemed like they were looking for a specific type of act, and I was like, ‘Oh, I did something that I think would work for this,’ So I made a tape and sent it in,” the 36-year-old Harbert said.

A couple auditions later and he was on the big stage in front of the celebrity judges and a “humongous audience.”

“I’m always nervous. It never goes away,” he said. “I can’t really tell you what happened because that’s a spoiler, I guess. But it was really fun. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. It’s one of the biggest competition shows on, so I was just really happy to be there.”

While Harbert had to stay tight-lipped about the show’s outcome, he did  drop one teaser.

“I did shout out my hometown. I don’t know how it’ll get edited, but I’m hoping Morgantown gets a shout out,” he said. “I hope people enjoy the show and I hope everyone is staying safe.”
