Son surprises mother with new nesting boxes during virus slowdown

GLADESVILLE — Jane Strahin got a nice surprise from her son, Tom Strahin, during the coronavirus slowdown.

The 83-year-old retired registered nurse had told him that her chickens tried to crowd into the nesting boxes, three birds to a box.

Tom surprised her recently with boxes he made.

Jane started keeping chickens after her husband died.

“They’re real interesting and a lot of company,” she said of the birds.

She began with about a dozen, in a chicken coop made by one of her three sons. She also has two daughters.

The flock has grown to 24 laying hens, and she recently added 24 chicks.
