Tuesday’s full moon largest of the year

Many people spent a portion of Tuesday night outside, checking out the full moon.

But it wasn’t just a full moon.

Once called a perigean full moon, it’s now known as a supermoon, also called a super pink moon and Paschal Moon.

On Tuesday, the moon was at its closest point to Earth this year — just 221,772 miles away.

Conversely, on Oct. 31, the full moon will closely coincide with apogee, its farthest point from the earth. On that night the moon will appear 13.8% smaller than it will appear this weekend. Some refer to that as a micromoon or a minimoon.

Tuesday’s full moon is also the first full moon of spring and is called the Paschal Moon, which helps set the date of Easter. The general rule is, the first Sunday after the Paschal Moon is designated as Easter.
