Men accused of killing WVU student waive preliminary hearings

MORGANTOWN — The two men charged with murder for the shooting death of WVU student Eric Smith on Feb. 28 both waived their preliminary hearings in Monongalia County Magistrate Court on Monday.

Shaundarius Reeder, 20, and Terrell Linear, 21, both of Fairmont, appeared with their attorneys before Magistrate Darris Summers on Monday morning for scheduled preliminary hearings.

A preliminary hearing’s purpose is to determine if the state has sufficient probable cause to present a felony case to a grand jury. Both the state and defendant are allowed to call witnesses at a preliminary hearing.

Both Reeder, represented by Christopher Wilson, and Linear, represented by Lance Rollo, waived the hearing.

The two defendants had a number of supporters on their side of the courtroom on Monday. About a dozen people showed up to support Reeder, one of whom shouted “love you” as Reeder exited the courtroom.

Nearly 20 people showed up to support Linear, who was greeted with a chorus of “love you” as he entered and exited.

Both men are being held in North Central Regional Jail without bond.

On Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Susan Tucker denied a motion by Linear to set his bond at $100,000.
