West Virginia football team to host key recruits for junior days

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Ding-dong! The dead period is, well, dead.

For high school football prospects across the country, that means making their way to college campuses for visits after a month long period where that wasn’t possible. The end of the recruiting dead period means prospects are now permitted to have face-to-face contact with college coaches and that is exciting for several reasons, namely in regards to visits.

That will be no different at West Virginia, as the Mountaineers are set to host a large number of talented prospects over the weekend for the first junior day in over a month.

While early, the list of those expected to be in attendance is already impressive — headlined by Spring Valley (Huntington, W.Va.) offensive tackle Wyatt Milum. The Rivals.com 4-star prospect is making his third junior day stop in Morgantown since December, and has become arguably the top player on the board regardless of position because of where he plays and his overall skill set.

Milum is down to WVU, Penn State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Virginia Tech and Kentucky, and this visit is a good sign considering how many times he has been on campus of late.

The program was highly active in targeting 2021 running backs during the three junior day events in January and that is expected to continue this coming weekend with players making return trips to campus in 4-star Edwardsville (Ill.) running back Justin Johnson and Clintwood (Va.) Ridgeview running back Trenton Adkins. Both have made it clear WVU is high on their lists.

Expect the program to take one at the position in the 2021 cycle, which could make the coming weeks interesting with how many top level talents are considering the Mountaineers.

Another expected to be on campus is Atco (N.J.) Winslow Township cornerback Jalen Cheek, and while he has also been to WVU before, the Mountaineers remain heavily in the mix. Either a cornerback or safety at the next level, Cheek has built a strong bond with the coaches and is excited for the next stop.

This list is only going to continue to grow as Saturday’s event nears, and with three commitments already in the 2021 class, well ahead of last year’s pace, perhaps more fireworks are on the horizon.

Still, visits season is back in play and that means expect talent to descend on Morgantown in short order.
