West Virginia golf team finishes sixth in Florida Gators Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The West Virginia golf team finished sixth as a team in the Florida Gators Invitational on Sunday.

The Mountaineers posted a six-over par 286 in the final round to finish the tournament at 856, and 16-over after three rounds of play in two days. The host No. 31 Gators took home the team and individual trophies, finishing 12-under for 828 as a team.

Junior Logan Perkins finished in second place on the individual leaderboard after notching a program record-low round of 62 during Saturday’s second round. Perkins shot a one-over 71 in the final round to post a total of 205 and finish the tournament at five-under on the par-70.

“I’m proud of our golfers for continuing to battle today,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “I’m very happy for Logan after a fantastic two days of golf. It was great to see him get out here in the team’s first spring tournament and play the way he did.”

Junior Mark Goetz carded 17 pars and one birdie in Sunday’s third round to finish tied for 31st place and post a total score of 216 at six-over. Senior Philipp Matlari finished just behind Goetz, tying for 37th. He ended the round with a trio of birdies to shoot a four-over 74 on the day, finishing the tournament with a score of 217 for seven-over.

The Mountaineers return to action at the Seminole Intercollegiate, in Tallahassee, Fla., on Saturday and Sunday.
