PREP ROUNDUP: 24 local wrestlers qualify for state meet

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — When the grueling Region I meet at Buckhannon-Upshur was over with, University High finished in 2nd with 202.50 points behind the returning regional champion Wheeling Park with 259 points.

Eleven Hawks qualified for the state meet, including three champions, three runner ups, three third-place finishers and two fourth-place finishers.

Morgantown and Preston also had grapplers qualify. The Mohigans will be sending seven to Huntington after finishing 5th as a team with 129.50 points, and the Knights are sending six after finishing 6th as a team with 115 points.

Out of UHS, freshmen Dom Parker (132 weight class) and Dakota Hagedorn (152), plus sophomore Corbin Turney (285) were crowed regional champions, while seniors Josh Sanders (220) and Jace Stockett (126) and sophomore Elijah Wellings-Osha (160) were runner-ups. Timmy Cargill (120), Joey Gidley (145) and Sean Murray (182) all placed 3rd, while Mason Pauley (138) and Ben Tower (170) finished 4th.

Morgantown had four third-place finishers — Garret Spohn (106), Trentin Thompson (132), Preston Harman (160) and Liam O’Connor (195). The other three qualifiers all placed 4th: Cameron Lawrence (126), Rennick Wotring (182) and Dylan Haseleu (285).

Preston had one regional champion (Jacob Gregg 195) , two runner-ups (Hunter Lantz 182, Jacob Jennings 285), one third-place finisher (Brendan Pacholke 152) and two fourth-place finishers (Bryson Wilkins 120, Ayden Bishoff 220).

The state meet is set for Feb. 27-29.

Girls’ basketball

No. 10 University 77, Spring Mills 36

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The regular season is winding down for girls’ basketall, and University (13-7) closed out its second-to-last game against Spring Mills with a swamping 77-36 win.

The 10th-ranked Hawks never relinquished the lead in the Class AAA battle, outscoring the Cardinals (7-13) 41-12 in the first half. UHS didn’t tap the brakes in the second half, taking it to SMHS with a 20-12 run in the third quarter and a 16-12 run in the fourth.

Nine Hawks found playing time and scoring opportunities in the win, with leading scorer Ashten Boggs leading the way with 18 points. Abbie Coen (14), Mallory Napolillo (12) and Lauren Dean (10) rounded out the team’s double-digit scoring for a combined 36 points.

Senior forward Jada Brooks was the only player to find double digits for the Cardinals, putting up 13 points off six field goals and a 1 of 2 performance at the free throw line.

University closes its regular season on the road Wednesday night, taking on Class AA Lewis County (12-8).

Morgantown 39, No. 7 Martinsburg 34

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Morgantown girls’ basketball team is on a roll, closing this week with an upset over No. 7 Martinsburg, 39-34.

The Mohigans (10-10) led by Kaitlyn Ammons duked it out with the Lady Bulldogs, as Morgantown entered the half up two points at 18-16. A slow third quarter is what did the Bulldogs in, though, as Morgantown doubled their score at 12-6. The Bulldogs (15-5) fought back in the final stanza, but Morgantown held on for the close win.

Ammons was the only double-digit scorer for Morgantown, although Lindsey Bechtel was close to breaking the threshold with nine points.

Morganne Andrews led the Bulldogs with 12 points, while Ella Joseph and McKenzie Jolliffe each had eight.

Morgantown returns to action on Monday, facing Preston in its final home game of the regular season. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Middle school girls’ basketball

Mountaineer Middle 64, Westwood 7: Ella Simpson had 16 points in Mountaineer Middle’s dominant showing over Westwood. Ashlyn Weaver added 15, and Lyla Byers had 10 in the win.
