Small fire at MTEC

The Morgantown Fire Department responded to a smoke-filled Monongalia County Technical Education Center on Friday morning.

A training gas-powered HVAC unit, capable of both heating and cooling, caught fire in the school’s HVAC workshop, said Bob Ashcraft, safety manager for Monongalia County Schools.

“We’re very fortunate that we did not have students here and no one was injured,” Assistant Principal Greg Dausch said.

The MFD responded to the call about 10 a.m. School employees called 911 as smoke alarms went off.

MFD Capt. David Dzurnak said there was a small fire in the furnace when firefighters arrived. It was put out with a water extinguisher.

Firefighters also used large fans to clear smoke from the building.

Schools were closed in Monongalia County on Friday due to the weather. Ashcraft said the incident would not impact the school opening on Monday.
