City of Morgantown clears streets, manages snowfall

MORGANTOWN — With the weather forecast predicting continued snow fall and accumulation throughout Friday, the Public Works Department will be staffed accordingly.

Crews will work throughout the day to treat and clear city streets in order to manage any accumulation. The Public Works Department has six salt trucks equipped with plows out treating city roads, as well as crews treating sidewalks and steps for pedestrian safety. The Public Works Department has roughly 3,000 tons of salt on hand.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends motorists follow these steps when driving in snow or ice conditions:

  • Keep your windows clear. Before driving your vehicle, clean snow, ice or dirt from the windows, the forward sensors, headlights, tail lights, backup camera and other sensors around the vehicle.
  • Drive slowly. It’s harder to control or stop your vehicle on a slick or snow-covered surface. On the road, increase your following distance enough so that you’ll have plenty of time to stop for vehicles ahead of you.
  • When stopping, avoid sudden movements of the steering wheel. Avoid locking of brakes as it will cause a loss of steering and control.
