Bids to be sought for Independence water line extension

NEWBURG — Bids for the Independence water project could be going out within the next 30 days, according to Sheena Hunt, executive director of the Region VI Planning and Development Council.

The project will extend the water line as far as the former Independence School and provide water to about 22 homes. This is less than half the 70 customers who requested service.

Newburg has worked toward providing water to the neighboring unincorporated community of Independence since 2008.

In an email Hunt said all final checklist items required by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program have been submitted to their offices and approval to bid has been given.

Hunt said upon bid opening the lowest responsive, responsible bidder will be determined

She said typically there is a 60- to 90-day bid hold period during which time additional contracting requirements are fulfilled.

Upon successful fulfillment of the contracting requirements, a contract with the contractor will be signed and a notice of award and notice to proceed will be issued.

She said it is anticipated that the contract/construction could take anywhere from two to four months.

Newburg Mayor Edgar Fortney said the town received a check from AML, which will help pay various fees.

Sheila Williams, attorney for the town of Newburg, said a letter from the Public Service Commission indicated no letter of necessity will be required. She said no loans were required for the project, so the staff opinion is the project “is in normal course of business.”
