Trinity Christian 58, Cross Lanes Christian 32

CROSS LANES, W.Va. — Trinity Christian girls’ basketball has been picking up steam as of late and heads into the new week after defeating Cross Lanes Christian 58-32 Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors (8-9) were led by three girls in double figures, Jaclyn Smith with 18 points, Maggie Mercure with 15 and Olivia Austin with 12. Unfortunately for Mercure — who netted 13 of her 15 points in the first half — what could have been a career-game fell short in the beginning of the second half after she hit her head on a Cross Lanes player’s jaw. Both girls went out for evaluation.

“I decided to pull her since we had a good lead,” Trinity coach Mike Baldy said. “I wanted her to take that [energy] into the next game. She should be good to go, it doesn’t look like a concussion, but we felt it was best to pull her for the remaining [minutes].”

Mercure helped the Warriors jump ahead to a big 33-22 lead at the half before they held Cross Lanes (3-12) to 10 points in the second half.

Clean defense was critical in the win, as the Warriors had a low 38% performance at the line, making just 7 of 18 their free throws. In comparison, Cross Lanes only stepped up to the line five times and hit two of its shots.

Wrestling

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — The University wrestling team was just shy of making history in becoming the first team to win the inaugural Class AAA state dual meets at The Greenbrier Hotel.

After defeating Region III representative St. Albans 44-24, the Hawks fell to powerhouse Parkerburg High by the same score.

“It was a good experience in taking the kids to The Greenbrier, teaching them how to act and dress there,” UHS coach Ken Maisel said. “We wrestled pretty tough against Parkersburg at the beginning, but it unraveled toward the end. We need to finish matches — we had a lead in some of them and blew it at the end.”

Three Hawks went undefeated through the duals: Jace Stockett (126), Dom Parker (132) and Josh Sanders (220). Stockett was also awared the Most Outstanding Wrestler award, given to one wrestler on each team that made the final round.

The Hawks return to action on Friday with a road match at No. 4 Huntington.
