PREP ROUNDUP: Warriors get first sectional win, thump Notre Dame 51-37

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Trinity Christian sealed its first two-game winning streak of the season with a 51-37 win over Notre Dame. It was also the Warriors’ first sectional win of the year.

The Warriors (7-8) won every quarter against the Fighting Irish (7-7), jumping ahead to a 22-10 lead at halftime before stringing together 29 points in the second half to outscore the Irish by two points to keep them under.

Olivia Austin, Jaclyn Smith and Maggie Mercure were all in double figures to lead the Warriors. Austin led the team with 17 points while Smith had 16 and Mercure had 14. The trio was also the only Warriors to face free throws, collectively hitting 72.7% (8 of 11) of their shots.

Senior Bailee Yokum paced the Irish in the loss, netting a game-high 18 points with six 3-pointers. Senior Emilee Henderson was also in double-figures to back up Yokum with 12 points.

Trinity returns to action on Monday at Clay-Battelle. The Warriors look to redeem their 62-50 loss to the rival Cee-Bees, just as they snapped back at Notre Dame who defeated them on Dec. 9.

Girls’ JV basketball

Morgantown 58, University 30: MaKayla Chipps and Avana Brown each had 10 points for the Mohigans (11-2). The Hawks were led by Maddy McClurg’s nine points.

Boys’ basketball

No. 7 Clay-Battelle defeats Buffalo 76-67

BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — No. 7 Clay-Battelle picked up its 12th win of the season, defeating visiting Buffalo (3-7) 76-67 in the Hometown Invitational Tournament.

The close win was secured thanks to a big night by Coltin Barr and Levi Carrico with 23 and 18 points, respectively.

Clay-Battelle (12-1) and Buffalo started out going shot-for-shot in the first quarter, but the Cee-Bees pulled ahead in the second quarter to take a 36-25 lead at the half. Buffalo strung together two 21-quarters to begin chasing C-B, but the Cee-Bees stayed ahead with 40 points. Alec Hanshaw led the trio with 22 points, while Noah Thompson netted 17 and Ian Thompson had 15.

Despite the loss, the Bison had three players in double-figures.

Clay-Battelle returns to action on Tuesday with a road game at Hundred.

Central Preston 8s 38, Buckhannon Upshur 33: Jared Haskiell scored 10 points for the Wildcats (12-2) in the close win. Ian Strader paced the Buccaneers with 10 points.

Central Preston 7s 34, Buckhannon Upshur 28: Aidan Schmidl scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats (3-1). Jonas Barton scored 11 points for the Bucs in the loss.
