Morgantown girls’ basketball ends week with 57-40 over Linsly

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown avenged Thursday’s loss to Wheeling Park with a dominating 57-40 win over Linsly (7-8).

The Mohigans had a packed schedule this past week, but ended on a high note for a 3-4 win-loss ratio.

Morgantown (5-7) started out strong and never relented, outscoring Linsly 18-7 in the first quarter and heading into the halftime break up 37-21. MHS closed out the game with a 20-19 run to seal it.

Kaitlyn Ammons had a game-high 27 points off 13 field goals — all inside the arc — and a 1 of 3 performance from the free throw line. Carleigh Grimm led Linsly with 18 points.

Morgantown returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Parkersburg South. Tip is set for 7 p.m.

Wrestling

UHS takes 7th at OVACs

WHEELING, W.Va. — University competed in the OVAC wrestling tournament, finishing 7th out of 50 schools.

The Hawks had four placements in total, with Jace Stockett (126 weight bracket) placing the highest at 2nd. Dakota Hagedorn (152) placed 3rd, Josh Sanders (220) placed 4th and Timmy Cargill (120) finished 6th.

“I think some of our guys underperformed,” UHS coach Ken Maisel said. “I told them I’m not mad. Our goal is to win a state title, not an OVAC title.”

Parkersburg South won the tournament, with Wheeling Park coming in a close second.

The Hawks return to action Wendesday at home against Wheeling Park. The meet is set for 6 p.m.

Middle school basketball

Mountaineer Middle 8s 48, Warwood 15: MMS (9-1) defeated Warwood Saturday with a 16 point performance by Ella Simpson. Ashlyn Weaver was also a major contributor with
12 points.
