Sidewalk, vault work expected to continue through February

Morgantown Communications Manager Andrew Stacy said the work that has closed the sidewalk and a lane of Spruce Street in front of Morgantown City Hall will likely extend to the end of February.

Morgantown City Council approved $224,000 in October to bring in Commercial Builders to repair both the sidewalk and the vault beneath the sidewalk in front of the building.

Vaults were typically used as storage or mechanical rooms and extend out under the sidewalks in front of a number of older buildings downtown.

Stacy said the original completion date was Jan. 31, but that has been extended due to unforeseen circumstances.

“The vaults were in poor shape, and as crews began work they uncovered structural issues that took additional time to work through,” he said, adding that despite the additional time, the project remains on budget.
