PREP ROUNDUP: Trinity girls’ basketball redeems Thursday loss, routs Jefferson-Morgan 53-12

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — After a loss to Weir on Thursday night, Trinity Christian turned around 24 hours later to defeat the visiting Jefferson-Morgan (Pa.), 53-12.

The Warriors, led by Olivia Austin with a career-high 21 points, held just one Rockets player — Autumn Gustovich — to the team’s 12 points.

Gustovich hit a 3-pointer on JMHS’s opening possession of the game and then was held to just one more field goal. Her final seven points came from free throws.

Austin’s 21 points led the Warriors (5-7) in addition to Jaclyn Smith’s 14 and Maggie Mercure’s 12. Mercure also had a big night with a double-double, crashing the boards for 14 rebounds.

The Warriors return to action on Monday with a road game at No. 5 Wheeling Central Catholic. Tip is set for 7 p.m.

Bridgeport 61, Preston 49

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Preston fell back to .500 on the season with a road loss at Class AA No. 9 Bridgeport (6-2), 61-49.

After Preston jumped ahead to a 16-11 lead in the 1st quarter, Bridgeport responded with a 18-10 run to take a 29-26 lead at the half.

A weak 3rd quarter for the Knights put them in hot water as the Indians outscored them 14-6. That was followed by an 18-17 Bridgeport advantage in the final stanza to seal the game.

The Indians were led by senior Nick Stalnaker with a game-high 20 points, plus Drew Hogue with 10. Additionally, seniors Austin Massey and Corey Skidmore each had nine.

Preston (4-4) was led by Jaden Fultz with 19 points and Nick Smith with 16. Austin Metheny (6) and Zach Shannon (4) combined for 10 more points.

Preston continues on its road tour, next heading to Parkersburg (3-5).

The Big Reds are coming off a 68-60 loss to Ripley on Thursday.

Clay-Battelle 79, Tygarts Valley 56

BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — The No. 6 Cee-Bees redeemed Wednesday’s loss to Trinity with a 79-56 swamping Tygarts Valley at home.

Clay-Battelle (8-1) started out strong, outscoring Tygarts Valley (5-3) 23-10 before closing the half up 15, 40-25.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the 3rd quarter, but it wouldn’t get them far as C-B was on their heels. The Cee-Bees closed out the night with a 22-13 run to take a 2-0 season series lead over Tygarts Valley.

Coltin Barr and Levi Carrico each had over 20 points in the win with 26 and 22, respectively. Seth Casino was the final Cee-Bee in double-figures with 15 points.

Logan George led the Bulldogs with 23 points, while Garrett Gibson tossed in 10.

Clay-Battelle returns to action on Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. road game at South Harrison.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Morgantown junior varsity fell to Parkersburg South in a close battle, even with a 14-point performance by Sabastian Dalton. The Mohigans are now 7-1.
