PREP ROUNDUP: Morgantown girls’ basketball nets second win, routs John Marshall 61-25

GLEN DALE, W.Va. — Morgantown girls’ basketball came away with its second win of the year with a 61-25 swamping of John Marshall on the road.

Led by Katelyn Ammons, the Mohigans (2-5) started out with a 12-8 lead and never looked back. After a 17-3 run in the second quarter, the Mohigans cleaned up the second half by outscoring the Monarchs (3-5) 32-14.

Ammons tossed in 13 points, while Mia Henkins (10) and Berit Johnson (9) combined for 19 more. Catherine Hunnell and Madeline Lucey each netted five points to lead the Monarchs.

Morgantown returns to action Tuesday with a home game against the undefeated Wheeling Park Patriots.

Clay-Battelle defeats South Harrison, 50-36

LOST CREEK, W.Va. — Clay-Battelle easily overcame South Harrison (3-7) on its home court, 50-36.

The Cee-Bees (4-2) picked up their fourth win of the year behind 15 points each by lockdown scorers Liv Ammons and Joleigh Sollars. Sollars was on fire from 3-point range, hitting five while Ammons netted two treys.

Clay-Battelle returns to action on Monday with another road game, traveling to Hundred (2-4).

Boys’ basketball

Preston holds off John Marshall 65-63

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — Preston squeaked out a win to start the new year with splits, edging visiting John Marshall, 65-63.

The Knights (3-3) started out on a 14-9 run before entering the half leading 37-29. The Monarchs (3-4) opened the second half by outscoring Preston 19-13, but the Knights still led 50-48 entering the final stanza. PHS managed to keep the lead through the final 8 minutes, denying the Monarchs a positive record.

Jaden Fultz led the Knights with 24 points, while Nick Smith backed him up with 18. Derrick Derrow and Cole Gilbert paced the Monarchs with 17 each.

Preston returns to action on Wednesday with a home game against Lewis County.

Trinity Christian picks up loss 6, falls to Notre Dame 67-52 at home

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Trinity Christian had Notre Dame on the ropes Friday night, but a big third quarter would give the Fighting Irish (4-3) the push they needed to pick up their fourth win, 67-52.

Fletcher Hartsock and Seth Goins led the Warriors (1-6) with 26 and 15 points respectively. Elijah Goodman paced the Fighting Irish with 17 points, while Jaden West added 15.

Trinity returns to action with a road game at Madonna on Tuesday.

Boys’ junior varsity

Trinity 65, Notre Dame 44: Gavin Jackson netted 17 points and Matt Gadd tossed in 16 more to push the Warriors over the Notre Dame, 65-44. Troy Petitto paced the Irish with 13 points.

Morgantown 68, University 56: The Mohigans were led by Sebastian Dalton’s 29 points, while Garrison Kisner added 20. The Hawks were led by Noah Braham’s 14 points and Aaron Forbes’ 13.

Wrestling

University sweeps Buckhannon-Upshur quad

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — University warmed up for its Saturday showdown with No. 3 Parkersburg by sweeping Friday night’s quad at Buckhannon-Upshur.

The Hawks (9-4) upended Preston 63-16 and B-U 48-27, and edged Fairmont Senior 37-36, with their two top wrestlers out with injury.

“It was a good team effort,” UHS coach Ken Maisel said. “We brought some guys up from second team, and everyone needed to step up. Most of them did.”

Although Saturday’s highlighted with the Big Red dual, UHS will also face Ripley. The tri is set to start at noon.
