Dorothy Cain

Dorothy Eleanor Cain, 98, passed away at her Westover home, Saturday,
Dec. 21, 2019. She was born Aug. 1, 1921 Over Cheat to the late Frank E. Burchinal and Cora Hastings Burchinal.

After graduating from University High School in 1939, she married David M. Cain (Junior) and raised four children in the house where she lived for the next 80 years.

For 27 years, she managed the S & H Green Stamps Store, winning Manager of the Year awards. She retired in 1982 to care for her husband stricken with ALS.

After her husband’s death in 1983, Dottie served her community. She was a tireless volunteer at Salvation Army Soup Kitchen and Red Cross Blood Mobiles. For 30 years she helped with Julie Caldwell’s care.

As a member of Westover United Methodist Church since 1949, she held many offices on Administrative Board, Trustees, and United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Friendly Service/Praise the Lord Class. She was the smiling greeter at the door before Sunday worship and was an ever-present fundraiser at church bazaars, bean dinners, bake sales, and luncheons. To many people, she was known as the “pecan pie lady,” a title she held for over 20 years.

Remembered for her boundless energy, Dottie was a world traveler visiting four continents and many USA sites as well as West Virginia landmarks and parks. She travelled to the Holy Land twice.

Dottie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David Cain (Junior) and her daughter, Patricia Lynn Clawges in 1989. She was the last Burchinal sibling having lost her sister, Thelma Cox, and her four brothers, Frank, Delbert, Bill and Bob Burchinal.

She is survived by her daughter Carol Powers (Roger), of Grafton Road; two sons, David L. Cain (Dawn) of Lorton, Va. and Gary B. Cain (Nancy), of Westover. She was grandma to 15 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and many great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dot’s memory to Westover United Methodist Church, 28 North St. Westover, WV 26501.

The family would like to thank Morgantown Hospice and Right at Home for their care during her final days.
