PREP ROUNDUP: Clay-Battelle boys’ hoops nets win 2, defeats Hundred 69-42

BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. — Coltin Barr had a game-high 23 points to lead Clay-Battelle in its second win of the early season, downing Hundred 69-42 on Friday night.

The Cee-Bees took a big lead out of the gate, outscoring Hundred 17-7 in the first quarter before going on a 20-6 run to close the half. Hundred finally broke into double-digit scoring after the half, but the 29 combined points weren’t enough to catch up to C-B who strung together 32 points.

Seth Casino tossed in 13 points an Levi Carrico added 10 to push the Cee-Bees in the victory.

Senior Logan Norris paced Hundred with 18 points.

Liberty (Harrison) 47, Clay-Battelle 44

GRAFTON, W.Va. — Clay-Battelle picked up its second loss of the season, falling to Liberty (Harrison) 47-44 in Friday’s installment of the Sam Bord Tournament.

The Cee-Bees (1-2) trailed 23-18 at the half, and failed to find room in the third quarter as Liberty began to pull away on a 13-5 run. C-B made up for it in the final stanza to pull within striking distance, outscoring Liberty 21-11 but couldn’t break ahead.

Liv Ammons led the Cee-Bees in the loss, putting up 18 points off four clutch 3-pointers and two field goals. Joleigh Sollars tossed in 10 more as the only other Cee-Bee in double digits. Maliyah Cottingham led the Mountaineers (2-1) with 18 points, knocking down one trey and shooting 55% from the free throw line. Gabriella Floyd added 14 more off seven field goals.

Clay-Battelle returns to action on Monday with a home game against Paden City.

Preston 65, Hedgesville 42

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — Preston continues on its season-opening winning streak, netting number 4 Friday night over Hedgesville.

“It was a rough first half and I didn’t know if [a win] was going to happen,” PHS coach Brian Miller said.
Preston opened up the night with a 16-9 run, but was met with a Lady Eagles’ resurgence in the second period when they dropped in 16 points of their own, outscoring the Lady Knights by four. After halftime, though, Preston exploded for 22 points in the third while holding Hedgesville to just six. They closed out with a 15-11 run to send the Eagles back to their nest.

Sophomore guard Michelle Thomas dropped a career-high 30 points behind 10 field goals and 10 free throws to lead the Knights.

Kelly Ours led the Eagles with 14 points, all in the first half. Senior Meghan Kearns backed Ours up with 13 and was the only other Hedgesville player to reach double digits.

Preston returns to action at the Seahawk Classic in Hilton Head, S.C., where they face Phillip-Simmons out of Charleston, S.C.

Bruceton 7s 39, Westwood 19: Nathan Barone led Bruceton over Westwood with 8 points Friday night. Westwood was paced by Anton Crudup with 8 points. WWMS returns to action on Monday against St. Francis.
