WVU freshman Hunter Armstrong qualifies for Olympic Trials Cuts after top finish at U.S. Swim Open Championships

ATLANTA — The Mountaineers wrapped up action at the USA Swimming 2019 Toyota U.S. Open Championships on Saturday, but the biggest moment for the Mountaineers came on Friday.

It all revolved around freshman Hunter Armstrong.

The freshman from Dover, Ohio, first qualified for the 100 backstroke A final after placing 6th in the preliminary race with a time of 55.16, then shaved a half-second off his time to place 4th (54.74) to qualify for the Olympic Trials Cuts. Should he make the cut, Armstrong will take part in the Olympic Team Trials from June 21-28, 2020, in Omaha, Neb.

On Saturday, Armstrong took the the pool once more for the 100 free, placing 3rd with a time of 50.59 — within .30 seconds of the 1st and 2nd place finishers.

Track knots nine wins in Marty Pushkin Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia opened its 2019-20 indoor season Saturday hosting the Marty Pushkin Open at the WVU Shell Building. The Mountaineers came away with nine wins, including big wins by underclassmen.

Redshirt sophomore Tessa Constantine got the first win for WVU in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:19.94. Redshirt freshman Amber Dombrowski followed with a win in the 400-meter dash clocking 1:02.14. Linda Jebet and Michaela Rose added three more wins for the Mountaineers, with Rose taking two wins in the 60-meter dash (7.93 seconds) and 200-meter (26.64). Jebet won the mile run (5:42.23).

The final track win for WVU came in the 4×400 relay as Dombrowski, Constantine, Rose and Erica Hegele finished at 4:10.87.

In field, sophomore Sada Wright won in the weight throw with a 16.5 meter mark. Myesha Nott and Ellie Gardner also picked up field wins in the long jump (5.18 meters) and pole vault (3.78 meters), respectively.

Wrestling hosts Buffalo

After falling to rival Pitt on Thursday, the Mountaineers (0-3) are set to host Buffalo (1-4) Sunday at 1 p.m.

197-pound division’s Noah Adams (No. 11 Intermat/No. 18 TrackWrestling) enters the match on an 11-win streak, last defeating No. 25 Kellen Stout by an 8-6 decision.

The Bulls feature 197-pounder Sam Schuyler who is ranked No. 20 by TrackWrestling.
