Roy Zinn III

Retired Morgantown City Police Dept. Lt. Roy Earl Zinn, III, 67, of Morgantown, passed away late Wednesday evening, Dec. 4, 2019, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 24, 1952, in Morgantown, a son of Grace Adeline Lanham Zinn of Morgantown, and the late Roy Earl Zinn, Jr.

Roy is survived by his wife Frances Jeanne “Jeannie” Malott Zinn, whom he married in Morgantown on Dec. 22, 1973; his children, Angie Bell and husband Eric, of Morgantown, and Roy E. Zinn, IV and fiancée` Anna Dongweck, of Lynchburg, Va.; grandchildren Elijah and Wyatt Zinn and their mother Erin Pearson (Candice), of Greenville, N.C.; his bonus grandsons Bryce Riley and Ethan Pearson; a brother, Danny Zinn of Morgantown; sisters-in-law JoAnn Hill and husband Randy, and Janet Stone all of Morgantown, and Jennifer Sisk of Fairmont; niece and nephews Joshua Shuttlesworth and wife Jocelyn, Logan Sisk, and Ashley Williams and husband David; and a great-niece Bria Williams.

Roy was a proud graduate of University High School; class of 1970 and a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam era. He retired from the Morgantown Police Department with the rank of Lieutenant after 22 years of faithful service, with nine of those years as a K-9 officer. He then continued working as a TSA Supervisor in Morgantown.

He had an inquisitive mind and could never learn enough about everything around him. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, being in the outdoors, campfires, and working around his property. A good cigar was known to help him pass the time, and in his own words: “I was a good dad, a good husband, and I never meant to hurt anyone.”

At his request, Roy has been cremated. Friends may join the family to honor Roy’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover / Morgantown 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, and again at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec.9, until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ed Moats officiating.
