WVU welcomes middle, elementary schools to women’s basketball game

Education Day brought a crowd of 10,663 to the WVU Coliseum Thursday morning for the women’s basketball game against Coppin State.

West Virginia University won, 82-47.

“Great crowd. Great enthusiasm in the gym,” WVU coach Mike Carey said. “Those kids did a great job.”

Admission was free and students from  35 local middle and elementary schools were in attendance for the special 10 a.m. tipoff.

This was the program’s second Education Day celebration. Last season, more than 9,000 fans came out to watch the Mountaineers knock off Bryant. That went down as the second-best crowd in women’s basketball history.

The Mountaineers now head to Cancun, Mexico, for a pair of games as part of the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving.

WVU will face Creighton at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 and then New Mexico at 4 p.m. on Nov. 29.
