No. 8 Mohigans swept by No. 1 Musselman in state quarterfinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Morgantown’s season ended in the early hours of Friday with a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Musselman.

The No. 8 Mohigans punched their ticket to the state volleyball tournament with a major upset over the Region I leader Wheeling Park 3-2 in the tournament semifinals before losing to University in the title game. Entering the state tournament as the bottom seed, Erica Manor and her team were slated to face the multiple-state title holding Lady Applemen. Neither coach was truly excited about the matchup, and Manor, a graduate of Musselman, noted that should her team win or lose it would be bittersweet moving forward.

The Lady Applemen opened the match with a 25-14 win and didn’t look back. Morgantown managed to fight longer in the following two sets, but Musselman ultimately prevailed 25-15 and 25-17.

One highlight of the tournament: MHS took home the sportsmanship award.

The loss marks Manor’s first year with the program, a season that saw her bring stability and begin to build a new culture within the program. MHS’ final record is 17-19-2.

“I plan on being here a couple of years,” Manor said. “We’re going to promote them getting into the travel (ball) circuit to enhance their skills in the offseason. (Then) we’ll take this state tournament (experience), get hungry and make it to the second round next year.
