No. 2 George Washington downs No. 7 University 3-0 in close sets

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — University head coach Don Godfrey wasn’t too excited about the seeding his team was handed for the state tournament. Amid that disappointment, he told his girls to keep a cool head and play like they had nothing to lose.

Unfortunately, the Hawks (27-7) season came to an end in the state quarterfinals behind a monster George Washington offense that swept UHS 3-0.

The Patriots and Hawks maintained a close first set, but GW overcame UHS 25-20. In the second set, UHS nearly defeated the Patriots but ultimately fell by three points, 25-22. To end things, the Patriots picked up a large advantage closing set 3, 25-19.

“It was just a couple of bad things here and there,” Godfrey said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump.”

As his 18th year at the helm ends with the loss, Godfrey is more than happy with the season.

“I think the girls (that returned) improved so much from last year. I told them I was so proud of them,” Godfrey said. “I want to applaud my seniors Ashten (Boggs) and Mallory (Napolillo) — they’ll be missed. I’m excited for the girls to come out next year, and hopefully we’ll make it back to states.”
