WVU lands 4-star running back Lamy Constant

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It had been almost three months since West Virginia secured a commitment on the football side of things, but that drought is now over in rather emphatic fashion.

That’s because the program landed one of its priority prospects left on the board in the 2020 class when Brooklyn (N.Y.) Canarsie running back Lamy Constant pulled the trigger.

Constant has quite literally been a constant in the WVU recruiting efforts since the new coaching staff took roots in January. The Mountaineers prioritized the versatile running back from the start and given his unique combination of size and speed, he made for an ideal fit in the offensive scheme.

Well those efforts paid off for the 6-foot, 190-pounder. WVU’s efforts were led by running backs coach Chad Scott, and he made it clear that Constant was the back that he wanted to add to the class. That relationship only continued to build and after a stop on campus for a junior day in March he was able to confirm many of the things he had heard about the school.

“They rolled out the red carpet for me and they showed me how big of a priority I was for them and the whole staff,” he said after the trip.

Constant would first cut his list down to WVU, LSU, Michigan State and Texas A&M, but the Mountaineers remained at the center of the discussion the rest of the way. That’s when he elected to pull the trigger and end his recruitment by joining the growing 2020 efforts of the WVU coaches.

For the WVU football program, Constant addresses an immediate need with at least senior Kennedy McKoy leaving the program in the offseason from that room. And the coaches are able to do it with a prospect that they identified early in the process to do just that.

Constant possesses great vision for a running back and is decisive in his cuts, with the speed to take advantage of it. He is elusive in the open field and often can pull away from defenders.

The Rivals.com 4-star prospect is an instant boost to the WVU recruiting class as well as not only the coaches, but current commitments had taken to the task of trying to lure him to Morgantown. The focus can now shift to other talented prospects such as Bluefield defensive end Sean Martin.

With Constant in the fold, the Mountaineers could still take another running back in the 2020 class with a number of players on the board with notably junior college running back La’Damian Webb one of those. The Alabama native received an offer from WVU earlier this month and is another talented running back that the coaches could pair with Constant.

It took some time, but the Mountaineers have landed a big piece to the future backfield.
