West Virginia men’s soccer team travels to face SIU-Edwardsville in MAC quarterfinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia men’s soccer team begins postseason play by traveling to SIU-Edwardsville for a 8 p.m. quarterfinal match in the MAC Championship today at Ralph Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill.

“We know that we go into this year’s conference tournament as the underdog, but we’re still confident everything can come together for us this week,” WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “SIUE is a great program with some really quality players. They will certainly be a big challenge for us, especially on their home field. Our job is to go in there and do whatever it takes to grab a result.”

Today’s match marks the second meeting between the two schools in the last 10 days. The Mountaineers (6-8-2, 0-4-1 MAC) and Cougars (8-4-4, 2-1-2 MAC) played to a 0-0 draw in doublt overtime on Nov. 2, in Edwardsville.

The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-0 loss to Akron in the regular-season finale last week.

WVU earned the No. 6 seed in the MAC Championship after finishing conference play with one point. SIU-Edwardsville (8 points) took the No. 3 seed and right to host the quarterfinal round.

The winner of today’s match will advance to the semifinals against No. 2-seeded Western Michigan on Friday at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

The Cougars are coming off a 1-1 draw at Western Michigan on Nov. 9. SIU-Edwardsville enters Tuesday’s matchup having only allowed one goal in its last four matches.
