Preston girls, Fairmont Senior boys win Big 10 cross country championship

KINGWOOD, W.Va. — The Fairmont Senior boys’ and Preston High girls’ teams claimed the Big 10 championship in their respective races Thursday at Preston.

Fairmont Senior took the top spot with 35 points and a total time of 1:28:02.28 (17:36.46 average). The remaining top 5 spots were: Bridgeport (2nd, 41 points), Preston (3rd, 133), Buckhannon-Upshur (4th, 133) and East Fairmont (5th, 145).

Fairmont Senior’s Ethan Kincell took 1st place overall with a time of 16:55.91. The Polar Bears had three other runners in the top 10.

For the girls, Preston finished far ahead of the second-place Polar Bears, winning with 37 points and a total time of 1:45:52.42 (21:10.49 average). The remaining four spots were: Fairmont Senior (2nd, 58 points), Bridgeport (3rd, 89), Elkins (4th, 112) and Grafton (5th, 132). 

Preston’s Allie Martin placed 1st overall with a time of 19:53.31. Chloe Stark (4th) and Abby Nolan (8th) were the only other Knights to place in the top 10.

Kincell was the boys’ Harrier of the Year.  Dayton McVicker of Fairmont Senior was the Boys Conference Coach of the Year. 

Martin repeated as girls’ Harrier of the Year, and Preston’s Paul Martin was the Girls Conference Coach of the Year.

Volleyball

University 3, Buckhannon-Upshur 0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — University (16-4) downed Buckhannon-Upshur in three sets (25-14, 25-14, 25-12) in Thursday night’s home match. 

Ashten Boggs continues to lead the Hawks, picking up 13 kills. Mallory Napolio added 11 kills and Sierra Lanham had eight. Rachel Shockley had 18 assists, while Payton Foulks picked up 15 service points.

The Hawks return to action on Saturday at Parkersburg South for an eight-team tournament

Soccer

University 1, Parkersburg 0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Hawks (14-5-1) finished the regular season on a good note, downing Parkersburg High (6-9-2) 1-0 in the final home game of the year.

UHS pressured Parkersburg througout the entire 80 minutes, logging 14 corner kicks and 17 shots.

Riley Nett accounted for the only goal assisted by Jacob Collins. Tim Bailey had one save.  

The goal  marked Nett’s fifth goal of the week continuing a torrid scoring streak.

UHS kicks off sectional play on Tuesday at Morgantown (14-4-1).

Middle School Football

Trinity Christian 46, Doddridge County 0

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Five players scored in Trinity Christian Middle School’s (6-0) 46-0 routing of Doddridge County to continue TCS’ undefeated season.

James Fortney-Garbart has four touchdowns (2 rushing, 2 passing), while Carmelo Kniska added two more (1 rushing, 1 receiving). Ben Lohmann (1 receiving TD), Jaylon Hill (1 rushing TD) and James Harper (1 rushing TD) added the final three scores for Trinity. Kicker Lydia Knight went 4 of 6 on extra point attempts. 

Trinity returns to action next Wednesday at Philippi Middle.
