Reedsville Council addresses pests, ordinances and high sewer bills

REEDSVILLE — Snakes and hogs were the topics of discussion at the Monday meeting of the Reedsville Council.

Mary Miller told council she and her neighbors have a snake problem.

“We have to look at a rock pile, and a door,” she said, referring to a door on councilman Scott Williams’ property. The rock pile is believed to be on property owned by the town.

“I saw a snake coming out of his (Williams) garage,” she said. She indicated there were a number of snakes. “I stepped on one. We’ve killed four of them.”

Williams said he would remove the door.

There is no indication the snakes are poisonous.

“Letters go out yearly about grass. We send letters out when there is a problem,” Mayor Jason Titus told Miller. “We can’t address rocks and lumber. We can address snakes if the rocks are on town property. We can move the rocks.”

“We killed one in front of our garage,” Miller said.

“I will go down and check it out,” Titus said.

Ryan Tennant also addressed council. He asked if an exception could be made to the town animal ordinance. The ordinance doesn’t allow pigs in the city limits.

“My two sons are in 4-H. they want to raise hogs for the Buckwheat Festival,” he said. “They would have them from May to September.”

Tennant said his sons, ages 8 and 10, want to raise two Yorkshire pigs each.

Titus said he would look at the ordinance and ask the town attorney what can be done to allow the boys to do the project.

In other business, Councilman Greg Burke said he has concerns about water and sewer bills.

“People don’t realize the price of our water and sewer is decreasing our property value,” he said. “I pay $156 dollars for sewer service. Someone recently said ‘Don’t buy a house in Reedsville.’ ”

There was no action or further discussion.
