PREP ROUNDUP: MHS girls’ soccer knocks off top-ranked Hurricane

HURRICANE — Behind goals from Kinslee Watkins, Alyssa Weaver and Michaela August, the MorgantownHigh girls’ soccer team knocked off top-ranked Hurricane, 3-0, on Saturday.

MHS goal keeper Jessica Jones recorded four saves to record the shutout.

Cloe Ratliff and Sammie Brown had assists.

MHS (14-2-1) will travel to Winfield at 10 a.m. Saturday.

University 2, Buckhannon-Upshur 4

BUCKHANNON — University (11-5-1) and Buckhannon-Upshur (10-3-4) entered halftime tied at 1-1, but the Buccaneers exploded for three goals in the final half to down the visiting Hawks.

Emily Lattea had two goals in the rainy nonconference match. She  now has 13 goals on the year.

UHS returns to action on Tuesday with an away game at Bridgeport.

Boys’ soccer

University 0, Buckhannon-Upshur 0

BUCKHANNON — UHS traveled to Buckhannon-Upshur to take on the Buccaneers in a chilly, Saturday morning contest.  The Hawks (12-5-1) brought high level intensity with a slippery pitch, but neither team could convert what few opportunities presented themselves and the game ended 0-0.

This marked just the second time this season that the Buccaneers (13-3-2) failed to score a goal despite averaging 3 goals a game.  Hawks keeper Timmy Bailey finished with 3 saves and the shutout.

The Hawks are back on their home field on Tuesday taking on the Bridgeport Indians. 

Morgantown 0, Charleston Catholic 0

CHARLESTON — Morgantown (13-4-1) traveled to Charleston Catholic (13-1-3) Saturday, but neither team could come away with a win and ended at 0-0.

This was the first time this year that CCHS failed to net a single goal, and Morgantown’s third scoreless game.

Morgantown returns to action on Tuesday at Parkersburg High.

Volleyball

Wheeling Park 3, University 2 

After the Hawks (14-4) defeated Wheeling Park earlier in the week 3-2, the Patriots returned the favor in the  OVAC 5A championship on Saturday.

Park took the first, third and fifth sets 25-13, 25-21 and 15-8, respectively. University won the second and fourth sets 25-13 and 25-21.

Ashten Boggs  recorded 19 kills, while  Mallory Napollio (15) and Olivia Kaddar (12) combined for 27 kill. Rachel Shockley had 43 assists.

The Hawks next face Morgantown on Tuesday at MHS. 

“It’s going to be a pretty exciting match,” UHS coach Donald Godfrey said. “Both teams are evenly matched and I think it’ll come down to who makes less mistakes.” 

The victory over Park earlier this week marked Godfrey’s 400th career victory.
