HOW THEY SCORED: Iowa State 38, West Virginia 14

First quarter

WVU TOUCHDOWN: Tykee Smith 19-yard interception return (4:29), West Virginia leads 7-0.

Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy attempted to throw a screen pass to Kene Nwangwu, but the running back bobbled the pass and the ball bounced up into the air just long enough for Smith to come in and pick it off and return it for the score.

It was just Purdy’s third interception of the season.

Second quarter

IOWA STATE TOUCHDOWN: Breece Hall 1-yard run (14:55), game is tied 7-7.

The Cyclones answered right back with an 11-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Hall’s first TD run of the season that came on a second effort.

Purdy hit Charlie Kolar with a 10-yard pass on a fourth-and-3 play to keep the drive alive. Purdy was 5-for-8 on the drive for 53 yards.

IOWA STATE TOUCHDOWN: Purdy 2-yard run (6:32), Iowa State leads 14-7.

The Cyclones took advantage of Leddie Brown’s fumble with a 10-play, 66-yard drive.

Purdy had the key play on the drive with a 2-yard sneak on fourth-and-two at the WVU 12.

WVU linebacker VanDarius Cowan also had a personal foul on third down that also extended the drive.

WVU TOUCHDOWN: T.J. Simmons 9-yard pass from Jack Allison (0:28), game is tied 14-14.

The Mountaineers answered right back with Allison, who came into the game for the injured Austin Kendall in the first quarter.

Allison went 6-for-7 on the drive for 77 yards and also hit Simmons for gains of 27 and 15 yards.

Third quarter

IOWA STATE TOUCHDOWN: Hall 12-yard run (9:39), Iowa State leads 21-14.

Hall scored his second touchdown of the game, but the bigger news is what came before the score.

WVU lost starting cornerback Hakeem Bailey after Bailey was called for targeting. He was ejected from the game and will miss the first half of next week’s game against Oklahoma.

WVU played the game without starting cornerback Keith Washington, who is out with an injury, meaning the Mountaineers played with a severely inexperienced secondary.

Fourth quarter

IOWA STATE FIELD GOAL: Brayden Narveson 45-yard kick (12:20), Iowa State leads 24-14.

The Cyclones chewed up more than six minutes with an 11-play drive that saw Narveson nail the kick right down the middle for a 10-point lead.

Purdy completed a 20-yard pass to La’Michael Pettway on the first play of the drive and then hit Pettway again for a first down on a third-and-12 play that was a missed opportunity by the Mountaineers’ defense to get off the field.

IOWA STATE TOUCHDOWN: Joe Scates 18-yard pass from Purdy (6:54), Iowa State leads 31-14.

The clincher came when Purdy went with play-action and found Scates in the back of the end zone.

Hall added 18 yards rushing on four carries on the drive.

Purdy’s pass gave him a passing and rushing touchdown in the game.

IOWA STATE TOUCHDOWN: Hall 1-yard run (1:42), Iowa State leads, 38-14.

Hall scored his third touchdown to put the bow on a 26-carry, 132-yard performance.
