Addison Clark’s overtime goal lifts West Virginia past Texas 2-1

AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore Addison Clark scored a golden goal in the 103rd minute to lead West Virginia’s women’s soccer team to a 2-1 win over Texas on Sunday.

WVU moved to 8-2-1 all-time against the Longhorns and 4-2- in Austin with the win.

“We faced so much adversity up until this point, so for us to come out and win this game is huge,” WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “I haven’t been more proud of a team. We grinded, put our hearts on our sleeves and did everything we could do to win.”

WVU’s best chance of the opening half came in the 23rd minute as senior Jade Gentile put a cross into the box that freshman Enzi Broussard volleyed a shot that went wide right after it was blocked by a Texas defender. Freshman Juliana Lynch hit a header off the ensuing corner, but it also went wide right.

WVU (7-4-1, 2-1) started the second half fast, as sophomores Clark and Alina Stahl registered a shot apiece in the first two minutes of the second half.

The Mountaineers broke the scoreless tie in the 48th minute as senior midfielder Jessica Lisi hit a long ball from the right side of the field that found Broussard on the left post. Broussard hit a perfectly placed ball to the right that went just below diving Texas (7-4-1, 3-1) goalkeeper Nicole Curry.

The goal marked Broussard’s first career goal.

Texas used an offensive barrage to net the equalizer in the 78th minute. The Longhorns put back-to-back shots on net that senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster parried before Cydney Billups headed the rebound into the back of the net.

The Mountaineers responded with four shots in the final 12 minutes of play but could not find the back of the net as the match headed to overtime.

WVU took just 3:10 into the second overtime to put the winning goal into the back of the net. Freshman Nicole Payne fired a left-footed shot from inside the box that was blocked back out to the 18-yard line. Clark took the rebound and fired a shot into the left side of the net to give WVU the 2-1 win.

Clark’s goal marked her second of the year.

West Virginia returns to Morgantown to take on No. 18 Texas Tech at 7 p.m. Thursday.
