PREP ROUNDUP: Morgantown girls, University boys take titles at OVAC cross country championship

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio — The Morgantown girls’ and University boys’ cross country teams claimed the respective OVAC titles in the conference championship Saturday.

The Mohigan girls took 1st place with 35 points, followed by University (46) in 2nd and Wheeling Park (138) in 3rd.

The University boys’ team took the top spot with four top-10 finishes for 61 points, followed by the Mohigans (73) in 2nd and Wheeling Park (120) in 3rd.

Morgantown’s sophomore Lea Hatcher was 1st overall with a time of 17:24.012 and was joined by Athena Young (18:05.436) in 2nd. University’s Zoe Shetty (3rd, 18:13.859) and Carolina Kirby (4th, 18:16.467) were close behind Young, and Irene Riggs (18:22.408)  was behind the two Hawks to claim 5th place for Morgantown.

For the boys, Larry Josh Edwards placed 1st clocked at 15:56.091, followed by Morgantown’s Jakcson Core (2nd, 16:17.713), Parkersburg South’s Cameron Marks (3rd, 16:30.051), University’s Jordan Thomas (4th, 16:33.058) and Caldwell’s Mason Ackley (5th, 16:37.314).

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a hat trick by Anna Iquinto, the Mohigans (11-2-1) beat Robert C. Byrd Saturday 4-0.

Freshman Amanda Weaver  scored with a header on a corner from Michaela August as well.

Anne Williams and Cara Stout each had an assist.

The Mohigans return to action on Monday at Preston High.

University 3, Jefferson 2

Tristen Bright, Mia Travis and Emily Lattea combined for three goals to push the Hawks (10-4-1) past the visiting Cougars (4-5-4) 3-2 on Saturday.

University  built its three goal lead and withstood a Jefferson comeback  on a windy morning at Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium.

Kassidy Wolfe and Madison Wesolowsky each  had one assist.  Lizzy Edwards finished with seven saves for the UHS, while Elle Colbert had nine saves for Jefferson. 

UHS next hosts Fairmont Senior  Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Trinity 9, St. Marys 0

SAINT MARYS, W.Va. — Dave Turak scored four goals and added an assist to lead Trinity.

Noah Kurilko and Kevin Kelley both added two goals for the Warriors and Kyle Knight had a goal.

For Kelley, it was his first two goals of his career.

Trinity (9-6-1) will travel to Preston High at 6 p.m. Monday.
