Preston police investigate man shot, killed in domestic altercation at house

KINGWOOD — Preston police are investigating the shooting death of a 43-year-old man killed Friday night at a home on Woolen Mills Road.

William Ellwood French III was killed by a gunshot, according to Preston Sheriff’s Chief Deputy P.A. Pritt.

“It was a domestic altercation among some family members,” Pritt said. “Preliminary investigation indicated that it may have been self-defense.”

No arrests are anticipated, Pritt said. Preston deputies and State Police investigated throughout the night and into Saturday. They will give their report to the prosecuting attorney, who will decide whether to present the case to the grand jury, Pritt said.

No one else had injuries that required hospitalization, the officer said. At least four people were present at the time of the 9:50 p.m. incident at the home.

There was not a home invasion, Pritt said, and it was not a home that deputies were familiar with from prior calls.

The officer would not say what type of gun was involved but said it was the only weapon involved, as far as police know.
