West Virginia volleyball falls to Oklahoma in 4 sets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineers (8-6) found some reprieve in Saturday’s home conference match against Oklahoma, but ultimately  fell to the Sooners (10-3) in four sets.

Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led WVU with 12 kills, and was backed up by sophomore Kristin lux with 10. Lacey Zerwas had a big day with 38 assists on a 44 kill total, and libero Alexa Hasting had a season-high 24 digs.

The Sooners took a big 14-2 lead in the first set and ended the first round with a massive 25-8 win.

WVU bounced back in set 2 breaking an 18-point tie to go up 21-18, but a 4-0 series by Oklahoma put them up 23-22. The Sooners killed a shot after the timeout and followed with another kill to take the 2-0 match lead.

The Mountaineers’ momentum peaked in the third set, winning 31-29 on an OU attacking error after trailing 22-19 late in the set.

Oklahoma ended the day in the fourth set, snapping back to claim the match 25-21.

West Virginia next plays Iowa State Saturday, Oct. 5, at home.
