Tristen Bright puts in go ahead goal over visiting Washington; UHS boys down Patriots 4-1

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Tristen Bright tapped in a rebound with eight minutes to play in the game to give UHS (6-1-1) a hard-fought 1-0 victory over visiting Washington (2-5-0).

Despite outshooting the Patriots 19-5 and having 12 corners in the match to the Patriots’ zero, the Hawks had a hard time finding the back of the net, as Washington sat deep and looked to catch University on a counter-attack. The strategy almost worked, as a well-placed through ball sent Washington’s Leah Goben in on goal midway through the second half, but UHS goalie Lizzy Edwards came up with an excellent save.

University finally broke the deadlock when Madison Wesolowsky found Emily Lattea down the right side of the field. Patriots’ goalie Ava Dardaris, who finished the game with nine saves, was able to get a hand to Lattea’s cross, but Bright was there to put the rebound into the empty net.

Bright almost doubled the lead soon after with a free kick, but her 20-yarder rattled off the crossbar.

“Washington tried to frustrate us, and they did a good job at it,” UHS coach Graham Peace said, “but our girls stayed patient and kept the work rate up. We’ve had some illness going through the team, which made it an even tougher battle, but the ladies came through when they had to. I’m glad we can rest for a day.”

Edwards finished with four saves for the Hawks. University next hosts Morgantown on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
