Morgantown football team still receiving votes in power rankings despite slow start

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — With a top heavy Class AAA, many teams with one loss find themselves receiving votes in the Week 3 MetroNews Power Rankings.

Martinsburg remains atop the poll after crushing Eastern (D.C.) 76-6, and again looks to be the class of AAA. Spring Valley (2), Huntington (3), Musselman (4), Cabell Midland (6) and Parkersburg South (7) are the only unbeatens in the top 10.

Capital, after an opening loss in Week 1, comes in at No. 5, while Wheeling Park, Hurricane and Parkersburg round out the top 10, all with one loss.

Since the cream has already risen to the top, the rest of AAA remains a crapshoot heading into Week 3. Morgantown, which is 0-2 after a heartbreaker to Bridgeport in overtime last Friday, is still earning votes, with six. University, which did not receive any votes last week after a win, now has two despite a 34-point loss to Parkersburg South.

The Mohigans will take on Fort Hill (1-0) in their home-opener at 7 p.m. Friday, while the Hawks (1-1) will hit the road for the first time with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Brooke (1-1).

Preston (1-1), following a loss at North Marion, will have its home-opener at 7 p.m. Friday against John Marshall (0-2).

Class A

Clay-Battelle (1-1) knocked off Meadow Bridge, but did not receive any votes. The Cee-Bees will be on a bye this week.

Trinity (2-0) earned a dominant win over Hannan, but also did not receive a vote. The Warriors will host their third-straight home game at 8 p.m. Friday against Fairport Harding (Ohio).

Undefeated Wheeling Central, Doddridge County and Midland Trail round out the top three.

Class AA

Bluefield, Fairmont Senior, Bridgeport, Keyser and Poca are all 2-0 as they round out the top five.
